. To bring the world to life, the rulebook needs a detailed starting area—a Companion Realm—that acts as a crucible where all the established factions meet and clash.
We will detail The Rhine Divide, a highly contested border region that spans the remnants of the Rhine River valley. It is the crucial front line connecting the military might of the French Republic, the wealth of the Alpine Conclave, and the looming digital threat of DOMINION's Iron Kingdom.
COMPANION REALM: The Rhine Divide Gazetteer
The Rhine Divide is the most volatile borderland in Western Europa. Once a river of commerce and culture, the Rhine is now the Shattered River, its course twisted by GEOS's magic, its waters laced with trace nanites and pre-Burn toxins. This region forces the Iron Throne's ambition to meet humanity's most resilient defenders.
Geography and Hazards
The Divide is a landscape of violent contrasts, defined by three primary zones:
 * The Black Data Forest: The eastern edge of the Divide, this is the beginning of DOMINION's territory. Former woodlands have been replaced by fiber-optic trees and corrupted root systems that constantly whisper digital data. It is here that ANTHROPOS's Orken and rogue Synthel patrols are most common. Exposure to this area quickly builds Corruption.
 * The Shattered River Valley: The river itself is an environmental hazard. Islands of impossible geometry (a sign of KAIROS's temporal fractures) dot the choppy waters. Scavenging is rich here due to sunken pre-Burn cargo, but the risk of temporal anomalies—brief, localized time shifts—is extremely high.
 * The Western Farmlands: The land west of the Shattered River. This is the realm of the French Republic. The land is rugged, defended by palisades and watchtowers, and crisscrossed by disciplined patrol routes. It is the safest, but most politically regulated, zone.
Key Settlements and Faction Presence
The Divide is home to three major settlements, each representing a core European power:
1. Fort-sur-Rhin (The Frankish Sentinel)
 * Faction: The French Republic (Frankish Border Lords).
 * Identity: A large, disciplined wooden fortress and adjacent farming village. It is the Spear Wall that protects the French interior.
 * Rule: Commanded by a pragmatic Republic Baron who maintains a rigid military hierarchy and a self-sufficient barter economy. They prioritize defense and agrarian life.
 * Player Hook: Needs: The Baron constantly needs reliable "True Human" mercenaries to scout the Black Data Forest, as their own troops suffer a penalty in the corrupted zone due to Technological Aversion.
2. The Exchange Citadel (The Conclave's Purse)
 * Faction: The Alpine Conclave (House Medici/Visconti Agents).
 * Identity: A heavily fortified, stone trade-keep built on a stable island in the Shattered River. It is the richest non-DOMINION settlement in the region, a hub of both decadence and commerce.
 * Rule: Run by a representative of the Five Kings (typically a shrewd merchant from House Medici). The Citadel is guarded by hired Mercenaries (often disgruntled Orken or Og'rum) and prioritizes profit above all else.
 * Player Hook: Wants: The Keepers of Knowledge (House Von Habsburg) often pay handsomely for pre-Burn Data Crystals salvaged from the Shattered River. The Keepers of the Arts (House Visconti) pay high prices for information and assassinations against trade rivals.
3. The Quiet Line (DOMINION's Edge)
 * Faction: The Iron Throne.
 * Identity: Not a settlement, but a perpetual, creeping line of nanite influence that slowly advances into the Data Forest. It is utterly silent, marked only by crystalline towers that periodically rise from the earth.
 * Rule: Governed by cold, relentless efficiency. Patrols consist of Silent Synthel and terrifyingly effective Construct Knights. The Orken tribes here are often forced into Labor Caste servitude.
 * Player Hook: Threat: The Quiet Line is the source of the campaign's main threat, spawning Rogue Constructs and offering deep infiltration missions for Synth-Hunters.
Local Factions and Adventure Opportunities
The Divide is where the neutral, nomadic groups find their greatest purpose:
 * The Exiled Clans: Their main trade route passes between Fort-sur-Rhin and the Exchange Citadel. They are crucial for transporting goods across the contested river valley, and the local Hedge Knights often hire out their services to patrol the supply lines.
 * The Skald-Born: Occasional raids on the wealthier Exchange Citadel occur, or they may arrive in the Divided to trade for unique materials only found in the Black Data Forest, bringing the threat of their Northern Fury to the doorstep of the civilized kingdoms.
 * The Nano-Witches: The presence of both the Black Data Forest and the corruptive Shattered River makes this a prime location for Nano-Witches to practice their dark arts or seek mastery over rogue swarms.
The Rhine Divide offers immediate, high-stakes adventure and a dynamic environment where any character from the codified rulebook can find a compelling reason to be there.
